Overview of Lab Established at Tata Motors - Dharwad

We have established the "Electric Vehicle Laboratory at Tata Motors, Dharwad," which was commissioned on January 8th, 2024. This state-of-the-art lab serves as a hub for apprentices and researchers to explore various aspects of EV technology. It offers hands-on learning opportunities, enabling participants to conduct research projects and gain practical experience in the fundamentals and development of electric vehicles. The lab is a vital resource for educating graduate engineers and advancing the field of EV technology.

The Electric Vehicle Laboratory has advanced tools and equipment that facilitate comprehensive training and upskilling for Tata Motors employees. The lab agenda focuses on setting strong foundations in EV fundamentals and providing in-depth knowledge of the EV domain. Employees can engage in practical sessions that cover essential aspects of electric vehicles, from basic principles to complex systems, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute to the evolving EV industry.

Looking ahead, Decibels Lab is committed to creating a centre of excellence in Electric Vehicle Battery Management Systems (BMS) algorithm development. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency, lifespan, and safety of batteries by developing smarter algorithms for state estimation, charge/discharge optimisation, and thermal management. By focusing on these critical areas, we aim to push the boundaries of battery technology and contribute to the broader goal of sustainable transportation.

In addition to advancing battery management systems, our future plans include upskilling employees to stay ahead in EV technologies. This continuous learning approach ensures that Tata Motors' workforce remains at the forefront of industry developments, equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to drive innovation in electric vehicle technology. Through these efforts, the Electric Vehicle Laboratory at Dharwad will play a crucial role in shaping the future of EV technology and supporting the growth of a sustainable transportation ecosystem.

Outcomes of Electric Vehicle Laboratory:

  • Employees gain hands-on experience with EV systems, boosting their technical skills.

  • Knowledge from the lab helps employees use EV technologies effectively, improving energy efficiency and cutting costs.

  • Employees learn how the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) manages essential tasks like start-up, shutdown, and charging sequences.

  • Trained employees can teach their colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous learning.

  • Employees learn to integrate control units with other EV components, enhancing system performance.

  • Employees become more adaptable to new EV technologies.

  • Employees can simulate faults and hazards to see how EV systems respond and protect the vehicle.
