Overview of the Electric Vehicle Center of Excellence at Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Bengaluru

The Electric Vehicle Lab at Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology (SMVIT), Bengaluru, was successfully commissioned on 17th August 2026 in collaboration with Decibels Lab as part of the institution's commitment to strengthening industry-aligned education, experiential learning, and research in electric mobility. The facility has been established to provide students and faculty members with hands-on exposure to key domains of electric vehicle engineering, including battery technologies, electric powertrain systems, automotive communication protocols, and vehicle-level experimentation.

Designed to deliver comprehensive practical learning across multiple EV subsystems, the lab enables learners to understand the complete electric vehicle ecosystem—from lithium-ion cell performance evaluation and characterization to electric powertrain integration, vehicle communication, and real-world EV operation. The facility bridges the gap between classroom concepts and industry practices by offering application-oriented experimentation on industry-grade platforms.

The Electric Vehicle Lab is equipped with advanced industry-grade platforms, including:

  • Cell Testing & Characterisation Lab
  • Advanced Electric Vehicle Powertrain Lab
  • Automotive Communication Training System
  • 2W Electric Vehicle

These platforms enable students to perform structured experiments and practical demonstrations related to lithium-ion cell testing and characterization, electric motor and controller operation, powertrain performance analysis, regenerative braking, automotive communication using CAN protocols, and vehicle-level diagnostics. Through these systems, learners gain practical exposure to EV architecture, component integration, testing methodologies, and industry-standard engineering workflows used in modern electric vehicles.

To ensure effective utilization of the infrastructure, the Decibels Lab team conducted a 3-day intensive hands-on training program for faculty members and students, focusing on laboratory operation, experiment execution, safety practices, and practical applications of electric vehicle technologies. The Electric Vehicle Lab empowers the institution to support experiential learning, academic projects, interdisciplinary research, and industry-oriented skill development across multiple EV domains, reinforcing its commitment to preparing future-ready engineers for careers in electric mobility and sustainable transportation.
