Overview of Lab established at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal

The Electric Two-Wheeler Testing and Data Acquisition Lab, established and commissioned on October 19th, 2023 at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, marks a significant milestone in the domain of electric mobility. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with cutting-edge tools and includes

  1. Electric two-wheeler

  2. Inertial Chassis Dynamometer

  3. EV Powertrain Digital Twin Development platform

The lab also encompasses a Quasi-static approach to Powertrain Modelling and a Dynamic Approach to Powertrain Modelling, offering a comprehensive environment for research and development in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

The equipment available in our lab enables a wide range of activities and simulations aimed at enhancing the understanding and performance of electric two-wheelers. From developing simulation models to analyze resistive forces and vehicle mass impact on range and performance to performing motor and battery sizing through simulations, the lab provides practical insights into optimizing EV design and functionality. Additionally, students can engage in hands-on testing of electric two-wheelers using CAN-based Data Acquisition, further bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Operating at an Intermediate level, our lab is designed to facilitate Electric Vehicle Laboratory sessions where students can conduct practical experiments aligned with their theoretical knowledge of EVs. This setup not only enhances their understanding of EV concepts but also prepares them for real-world challenges in the electric mobility sector.

Looking ahead, our future agenda includes upgrading from an Inertial Dyno to an advanced eddy current load-based dyno. This upgrade will enable us to perform Road Load-based Simulation (RLS), providing a deeper understanding of standard vehicle testing protocols and vehicle behavior. With a focus on continuous improvement and innovation, our lab is committed to shaping the future of electric mobility through practical research and advanced testing capabilities.

Outcomes of EV Lab

  • Creating a Virtual twin of the ELetric two-wheeler Powertrain to have a deeper understanding analysis.

  • Expose to Standard Electric Two wheeler testing to understand the Vehicle's performance.

  • Co-relation of Real-time testing and Simulation-based testing and improvement.
